Gena Trust Spotlight

English with a Writing and Publication Concentration (B.A.),
Graduated 2008

What are you doing now?

I own a Farmers Insurance agency.

How did you get your current job?

I was recruited by Farmers while I worked for another insurance company.

On a typical day in your position, what do you do?

On a typical day, I meet with clients to review their coverage needs and present proposals to provide them with insurance that will protect their assets without overextending their budgets.

What advice would you give someone considering English studies?

For those considering English studies, I'd say go for it! While I was an English major, I learned that a well developed understanding of the English language and grammar gives you a super power. I truly believe that those who study English develop a relationship with words that is different from those who have not.

I love words and choose them carefully based upon my intention and audience. I learned to listen to both what is said and what is omitted. I take inference from punctuation used and not used. I learned how a breath can be as meaningful as a word. English studies can give you the ability to see beyond what is initially presented and give you the tools to respond.

If you were in a position to hire new graduates, what characteristics would you be looking for?

If hiring a new graduate, I would look for the ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in writing and verbally. I would also look for the ability to comprehend communications and make proper inferences from what was heard or read, along with the ability to think on one's feet.

How did the English major prepare you for your career?

My English major prepared me for my career by feeding my love for words and giving me a framework to make the English language work for me in all aspects of my life. I can comfortably communicate with my clients whether they have millions of dollars in assets to protect or a small home to cover. I'm prepared whether English is their second or fifth language, whether they are young or old.

My major helped me see that common ground can be created and supported through language. I use that knowledge and the skills Iearned to connect and communicate meaningfully with my clients, building  a trust and respect between us that allows us to do good business together for years.

Please name any specific course (or courses) that has been particularly helpful to your post-graduation life.

Applied English Grammar with Dr. Joyce Stavick

Did you complete a minor? If so, what was it? If it has contributed to your career, please explain how.

I minored in Psychology. Coupled with my degree in English - Writing and Publication, I feel that the minor has given me a special insight into my customers. Psychology taught me to listen to what's said and not said. English studies taught me to notice how things are said and the words that are used. Together, they help me understand my clients on a deeper level. This helps me anticipate and address their concerns before stated, making it easier to make the client feel heard and valued. I double majored with Sociology.
