Studies in English Language Learning Minor

The studies in english language learning (SELL) minor offered by the Department of English is designed for teachers of language. The program introduces students to the principles of linguistics and theories of first- and second-language acquisition. Students enrolled in the program will learn how language and culture affect values and perceptions inside and outside of the classroom.

The program was created so that students graduate with an excellent understanding of standards-based practices, assessments and strategies related to planning, implementing and managing ESL and content instruction, including classroom organization, teaching strategies for developing and integrating language skills, and choosing and adapting classroom and multimedia resources.

More About Studies in English Language Learning
Students completing the SELL minor will be prepared to teach English in multiple contexts, developing innovative language curricula rooted in the following:

Linguistic knowledge of English structure, including phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics;

Language learning theory and related evidence from applied linguistics research;

Awareness of interrelationships among the sociocultural constructs culture, society, power, and identity, particularly as these relate to language learning and English as a global language;

Research-based pedagogy, including syllabus design, lesson planning, classroom design, text/materials evaluation, technology integration, and assessment;

Commitment to English language teaching/applied linguistics as a profession, with connections to its professional associations, certifications, research practices, and publications.
