J. Byron Woolfolk Endowed Scholarship in Analytical Chemistry

The J. Byron Woolfolk Endowed Scholarship in Analytical Chemistry has been established in his honor and available to Chemistry majors with an interest in Analytical Chemistry.

John Byron Woolfolk was a professor of Chemistry and Geology for over twenty years (1970 - 1991) and during that time was instrumental to the personal and academic development of countless students of then North Georgia College whether their future plans lay in the sciences or not. His passion for teaching went beyond the classroom as he would often take his Geology students on adventures to experience firsthand the historic aspects and geologic nuances of Dahlonega’s Gold Rush.

He was a mentor, father figure, friend, and confidant to many students and faculty, always interested not just in their academic challenges but day-to-day lives as well.

As he and his wife Martha Lu had no children, he viewed his students as his own. His pride in their successes was obvious, as they moved beyond the tight knit Rogers Hall family on to future endeavors. Even after his retirement he remained in Dahlonega, and continued to mentor the new Chemistry Department faculty members who had helped to fill his shoes.

Because of his influence on the lives of many, not just students and faculty of Chemistry, but the whole of the North Georgia family, the J. Byron Woolfolk Endowed Scholarship in Analytical Chemistry has been established in his honor and memory. This endowed scholarship is available to Chemistry majors with an interest in Analytical Chemistry.
