Marina Monteiro Interview
2018 Communication (B.A.) Graduate
How did you get your job?
At the end of last year, my professor, Shelia Conti, saw a job posting from Kate Underwood, an executive producer at the Weather Channel, and referred me for the position. That opportunity was for an on-camera job, which is my passion, but ended up not working out because I didn’t have time, as I was still in school. However, at the beginning of this year, I was contacted by Carrie Holt, another executive producer at the Weather Channel, to work as an associate producer. She explained that I would be mainly editing videos, and I immediately accepted the opportunity. On my first day of training, both Carrie and Kate called me to the conference room and invited me to host a tech show that they were starting. I got extremely excited to be given the opportunity to be on camera, as it was something that I always wanted to do. That is what I am currently doing.
On a typical day in your position, what do you do?
Usually, I spend the majority of my day editing videos and posting them to the Weather Channel app. My job requires a lot of organizing and scheduling to make sure that all videos are posted on the correct date. I also make sure to set some time to plan the videos for the tech show, as I am the one that creates the content for the videos I host. Moreover, when I shoot, my day is a little different. I also have an appointment for hair and makeup, and I make sure to practice for the shoot, help to set up equipment, and record.
What special advice would you give someone entering your field of work?
I would say that you should work hard, accept challenges, and be interested in learning and doing something new every day.
If you were in the position to hire new graduates, what would you look for in them?
I would look for someone that is passionate and a hard-worker. I also believe it is very important to have someone that takes challenges and gets out of their comfort zone.
Was there anything specific that you learned while attending 91福利导航 that has been especially beneficial in your career?
I really loved the broadcasting classes offered by Professor Conti. Her classes helped me learn the importance of deadlines and the importance of working hard to meet them. I could also do a lot of on camera work, which was essential to build my final portfolio.
