How did you hear about your internship?

I was a volunteer with the organization before officially changing my title to an intern. I discovered TransParent in July 2020 via Google. I was searching for a way to get more involved with and provide aid to my community, and the organization has provided me with just that.

What has been the most valuable (or favorite) part of the experience?

Working with parents. Though TransParent is a national organization, we are a tight-knit community. The community of parents have pushed me to see myself as a writer and person in new ways, which has been an amazing gift from my internship experience. Our work as an organization is not always easy, but it is highly rewarding (and emotional!) to watch the families in our organizations grow into themselves and become a more confident unit. It makes me feel a sense of pride, unity, and connection that I’m immensely grateful for.

How will this help you in the future?

My position entails a lot of research and editing. My target audience is primarily parents who are in vulnerable positions, given today’s climate, so in order to communicate with them effectively I have had to adjust how I relay information to them. In order to be successful, I have to communicate in a way that is both effective and positive, realistic and hopeful. As I prepare myself for graduate school and a future career in the literary world, my newfound research skills and ability to recast and relay information will be immensely helpful.
